Hasiru Dala is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to advancing social justice for waste pickers through direct interventions in identity rights, education, healthcare, housing, pensions, skill development, and employment access. We advocate for a people-centric, decentralised approach to sustainable solid waste management, engaging with local governments, citizens, volunteers, and businesses committed to sustainability and the circular economy.
Our mission is to recognize the contributions of waste pickers and informal waste collectors, ensuring their inclusion in local waste management systems to facilitate stable income opportunities. We envision an inclusive society for waste pickers and informal workers, free from discrimination based on age, class, caste, religion, occupation, gender, or sexual orientation.
Since our inception in 2010, we have expanded our reach across two states, 18 cities, 38 talukas, and 64 villages in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, impacting over 25,000 waste pickers and their families.

Our latest initiatives are designed to address real challenges faced by waste pickers and vulnerable groups, while ensuring inclusivity, safety, and long-term sustainability.
Hasiru Dala has launched India’s first open-source Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kit specifically designed for informal waste workers. Developed in close consultation with waste pickers, the kit includes gloves, masks, boots, and aprons tailored for comfort, durability, and everyday usability. These designs will be made freely available to NGOs, municipalities, and communities nationwide, enabling widespread replication and adoption.
In collaboration with ten Gram Panchayats in Dakshina Kannada, Hasiru Dala implemented a zero-waste model for menstrual products, including:
Distribution of menstrual cups across seven panchayats, achieving 90% adoption among women participants.
Improved collection systems—door-to-door waste pickup, classification into dry/wet streams—with about 1 tonne of waste collected daily, processed via composting units and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).
Educational outreach in schools (Trashonomics) and a clean-up of 2.5 tonnes of waste from a dumping hotspot.
Nagara pravaha – Community Recharge Wells in Belagere Settlement (June 2025)
To address recurring flooding and water scarcity in a waste-picker community in Bengaluru’s Belagere area, Hasiru Dala installed rainwater recharge wells. These wells help reduce flood risk and replenish groundwater, providing a simple, climate-adaptive solution for a vulnerable settlement.
